Sainik Schools, which are residential institutions for boys, offer a public school education. However, now girl candidates can apply for admission to Class VI at all 33 Sainik Schools. These schools are affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, and, additionally, receive support from both Central and State funding.

The scheme to establish Sainik Schools began in 1961 with the goal of preparing boys academically, physically, and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy. Currently, there are about 33 Sainik Schools across the country. Despite this, proficiency in English is not required for admission, even though the medium of instruction is English.
